The above routine was born out of love and concern for my mother during her battle with cancer. I hope that it can benefit others who are also struggling with their health.
The illness and the treatments created a wide range in her day-to-day energy levels, so I created these 3 levels with that in mind. Level 1 is for the awful days - everything can be done from a bed, couch, or comfy recliner. Level 2 is for those just okay days and every pose is done in a firm kitchen chair. And Level 3 is intended for the felling strong days, when standing beside a kitchen chair is possible.
A couple of notes from your friendly yoga teacher to keep you safe: In Level 2, if you hav concerns with high blood pressure, glaucoma, or heart issues, please do not lower your had below your heart in the Seated Forward Fold. Simply rest your elbows on your knees and lean forward, with your gaze toward the floor. Also, to benefit from the Half Seated Boat pose you don’t necessarily need to lift your leg as high as mine is pictured here. Make sure you are securely seated in your chair, hold onto the sides with your hands, and lift your straight leg to the point you feel a nice stretch and engagement in your abdomen.
Finally, in Level 3, Eagle Pose can be done with a hand resting on the back of the chair to help maintain balance.
Please practice yoga in a way that benefits you, stretching to a point that feels good, not painful, and being aware of your balance and limitations. These poses can help you maintain some muscle strength, bone health, and mobility during an otherwise difficult time of life.
Wherever you are, whatever you're doing right now,
take a short break. Breathe slowly and intentionally in through your nose and release it even more slowly
through your mouth. Roll you shoulders twice.
Turn your head to the left. Breathe in.... breathe out....
Turn your head to the right.... breathe in.... breathe out....
Tell yourself that you're doing great.
Enjoy the rest of your day!
